B.
The energy that food gives us is measured
in
kilocalories, or one thousand calories.
C.
A calorie is
the energy that is needed to raise the
temperature of water by one degree
Celsius.
3.
-Water
Although water does not give us energy it
is the
most important nutrient. We may be able
to live
on without the others for weeks, but we
cannot
go on without water for more than a few
days.
Water has many functions in our body.

a day.
We get it from the water and liquids we
drink but
also from fruits, vegetables and other
food.

-Fats
Our body needs fat in small amounts.
Fats are
made up of carbon , oxygen and hydrogen
. They
store vitamins and produce fatty acids.
We need
these acids to produce cell membranes.
B.
Fats can come from animals or plants.
They are
in meat and dairy products, like butter

THEORY
1a)
Legumes:
A legume is a plant or its fruit or seed in
the family Fabaceae. Legumes are grown
agriculturally, primarily for their grain
seed called pulse, for livestock forage and
silage, and as soil-enhancing green
manure.
1b)
i) Dry beans ( Phaseolus spp. including
several species now in Vigna ) :
E.g
- Kidney bean , navy bean , pinto bean ,
haricot bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris)
--- Lima bean , butter bean ( Phaseolus
lunatus )
ii)Dry broad beans ( Vicia faba ) :
E.g
-- Horse bean ( Vicia faba equina )
-- Broad bean ( Vicia faba )
1d)
i) 15 bean soup.
ii)Baked beans.
iii)Bandeja paisa.
iv)Bap.
================================
2a)
i) Long term storage of fresh produce (12
months+) without needing a refrigerator
or freezer.
ii) Environmentally friendly - using
seasonally grown and locally sourced fresh
produce, re-use preserving jars, reducing
food packaging and reducing food
miles.
iii) Save money by buying in bulk and
seasonally.
iv) Flavour! Home canned food won't
contain artificial preservatives, BPA or
other artificial ingredients.
v) Convenience - ready to serve in
minutes.
vi) Community involvement - both the
canning process and sharing with family,
friends and neighbours. Teach skills to the
next generation.
vii) Gifts - nothing beats a homemade jam
for a present
viii) Prepare for emergencies and/or
illness.
ix) Personal satisfaction. We love creating
new flavour combinations that you cannot
buy in your local store - and showing how
to use canned food in cooking dishes (ie
marmalade in a stir-fry)
x) Learn more skills ie how to use all of
the fruit and reducing food wastage. For
example: apples - make apple slices (or
pie filling), extract juice from the peels
and cores.
2b)
i) Cooling E.g Fresh fruits and Salads
ii) Boiling e.g Milk and water
2c)
i) Prevention or delay of microbial
decomposition
ii) Prevention or delay of self
decomposition of food
